So as you all well know by now if you're a regular reader of this blog, highlighters are my absolute favourite makeup product. I first discovered highlighters around two years ago and since then I have not gone without one in a makeup routine. I have quite a collection of them, ranging from the Sleek Solstice Highlighting Palette and the cult favourite MAC Soft and Gentle to the ABH highlighter in Starlight. Although I have quite a few in my collection already it continues to expand and my latest purchase(thanks to the fiancee!) is the NYX Strobe of Genius Illuminating Palette which has quickly become a favourite of mine.
I literally read one review about the Strobe of Genius Palette and I was won over. I knew it had to be mine from then on and so I added it straight to the top of my very long wishlist. Somehow Josh had got hold of my wishlist and made a cheeky surprise purchase and the rest is history. I'm so glad I have it in my possession now. Don't you just love surprises? The good kind of course.
The palette includes 7 highlighting/strobing shades, 4 of which have smaller 0.07oz pans, and the other 8 shades 0.014oz. I love the variety of shades that live within the palette as there's something for everyone. There are pinks, golds, a champagne, and even a pearlescent lavender which happens to be my favourite of them all. They come packaged within a simple black palette with a transparent lid. It feels quite sturdy and the clasp shuts down tight so you know they're secure. I do feel that a mirror could've came in handy for travelling though so that's slightly disappointing.
The colour payoff is incredible, seriously, although there are one or two disappointing shades within the palette that appears a little chalky and lets it down a little. Those are the pink and gold shades from the left on the top row. The highlighters are so buttery and soft and glide so beautifully onto the skin too. To apply my highlighter I like to use my Real Techniques Setting Brush as I do with my other highlighters and it works so so well.
All of the shades are so striking and beautiful on the skin(well, some more than most), particularly the lavender shade and the 3 on the bottom row. I find them to be the most pigmented of them all. You literally need one swipe on the cheeks, tip of the nose and cupids bow and you're good to go. They can come across as quite intense but that's what I love about them. You can also apply it with your finger or a fan brush if you want a subtle, natural look, or even combine different colours together to make your own customised shade.
As you can see by the swatches above the pink and gold shade on the top row is barely detectable and that's after a few swipes. I am so disappointed that they're not all of good quality but I would happily purchase it again just based on the rest of the shades within the palette.
If you're a lover of strobing or highlighting as much as me then I highly suggest you check this out. The NYX Strobe of Genius Palette is £15 available here from Selfridges.
